ACADEMICS: What is the CAT Program?

Ridge View's newest academic program is the Carolina Alliance for Technology (CAT). CAT is a federal grant designed to help fill the skill gap in high-growth, H-1B computer science and engineering occupations in the available workforce. This program offers 62 freshmen in four S.C. high schools a chance to participate in coursework focusing on the fields of Computer Science and/or Engineering, which are typically filled with state or out of country applicants. The other high schools aside from RVHS with this program are Westwood, Laurens and Clinton. The students will have a chance to participate in coursework that is infused with applications for the Computer Science and Engineering industries. Every year, for the four-year life of the grant, sixty-two freshmen will be invited to participate in the program at each school. These students will remain in the program throughout high school. Summer experiences at Disney and Clemson are available to CAT students who qualify, as well as personalized support of CAT counselors, personnel and faculty. There is a large emphasis on service learning, project-based learning, internships, apprenticeships, and job shadowing.
