ATHLETICS Highlight: Girls Track Sets State Record in 4 x 400

Congratulations goes out to Arlicia Bush, Amarrah Cooks, Johnaida Eliscar, Faith McKie, and senior Melinda McCallum for their outstanding performance at the State Championships this Saturday, placing 3rd overall as a team. The icing on the cake was their victory in the 4 x 400 relay in a blazing 3:49.07, which broke the previous state record of 3:51.3 held by Spring Valley in 1993 in this event. Eliscar led off in a time of 58.2, followed by Cooks (56.5), McKie (58.20), and Bush (56.1). Making this performance even more impressive is that Eliscar is an 8th grader while the rest of the relay team are sophomores. 

Bush had a busy and remarkable day as she captured the individual state championship in the 400 Meter Dash by setting the track on fire with a clocking of 54.96. She also placed fourth in the 200 Meter Dash (24.60), and teamed with Cooks, Eliscar & McCallum to place 2nd overall in the 4x100 Meter Relay (47.47). Additionally, both relays and Bush's individual 200 and 400 Meter times met the qualifying standards for the New Balance National Championships in June. 

Eliscar's 4th place finish in the 400 Meter Dash (57.84) and McKie's 5th place finish in the 400 Meter Hurdles (65.92) also contributed heavily to the Blazers successful day.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Turning in Student Locks

Students can begin turning in their locks from their lockers to Mrs. McKenny in room C62. Students must remove their locks from their lockers and turn them in on or before the last Monday of school, which is June 2, 2014. Thank you for your assistance.

ACADEMIC SPOTLIGHT: English 1 EOC Tomorrow!!

All students in English 1 will take their English 1 EOC tomorrow.  Students should report to school with their Chromebooks fully charged and should bring their charger to school tomorrow just in case they will need it.  

To all English 1 students, please get a good night sleep, eat a good breakfast, and arrive on time to school tomorrow.  All EOCs are the final exam for the course and will count towards 20% of the final average.  The list of the other EOCs this week are as follows:

• Algebra I (Algebra 1, Algebra 1 Part 2, & Mastery Algebra): May 22nd
• Biology: May 23rd
• U.S. History: May 23rd

REMINDER: Summer SAT/ACT Prep Camp

Youth Leadership Conference Opportunity

The Military Order of World Wars (MOWW) is sponsoring a Youth Leadership Conference at Patriot's Point in Mount Pleasant, S.C. The event is scheduled for June 24-27 and is open to rising sophomores and juniors. MOWW will pay for all fees associated with the conference, but you must provide transportation to and from Patriot's Point. However, if you sign-up and do not attend, you are responsible for the $200 registration fee paid by MOWW. If you are interested in attending, please contact Ms. Bishop in the College and Career Center or First Sergeant Cannon in Room B-36.

REMINDER: Wings for a Cure

Buffalo Wild Wings on Devine Street is hosting Wings for a Cure on Monday, May 19th in which 20% of ALL guest checks all day will be given back to Cure Sanfilippo in order to save Eliza O'Neill. 

Eliza was diagnosed with Sanfilippo Sydrome-Type A,  a rare terminal neurological genetic disease in which children are missing an enzyme necessary for normal cellular function.  A gene therapy cure has been successful in animal testing, but further research requires private funding. The O'Neill's have set a goal of 1 million dollars to raise to help fund Sanfilippo research. Over the last 7 months, they have raised over $750,000. For more information, click on the image.
