AVID: Advancement Via Individual Determination

AVID is an academic, regularly scheduled elective class, during the school day, based on writing as a tool of learning, the inquiry method, and collaborative grouping.  The three main components of the program are academic instruction, tutorial support, and motivational activities.  AVID students are students in the middle, capable of completing a college preparatory and/or honors path of education with support.  These students often are not realizing their full academic potential.  In the identification process a number of criteria are consider including, but not limited to state, standardized test scores, GPA, citizenship, attendance, desire and determination to learn and succeed, first in the family to attend college, historically underrepresented in 4-year colleges and universities, and economically disadvantaged.  Once accepted into the program, AVID students must maintain at least a C average, satisfactory attendance, and good citizenship across the school.  To hear more about  this program, from Ridge View AVID graduates, click the AVID logo.
