This is the fifth post in a series of blogs about our Summer Reading Celebration last week. The students that read the book Summer of the Apocalypse by James Van Pelt took part in various activities such as a book discussion, a pack your survival bag activity, and a sling shot competition. The book discussion was aided by insight offered by the author when e-mailed by the teachers organizing this book study group. In the survival bag activity, students had to choose what items they would bring with them if they had to flee their homes. They were then scored based on the usefulness of their choices, and the weights of those items. The sling shot activity was chosen because a sling shot was the weapon of choice by the main character of the book, so the students used paint balls as ammo with their sling shots in shooting targets of wolves and militia men, two of the adversaries mentioned in the book. The performance of these students would have made the producers of Doomsday Preppers proud!
