The Ridge View Blazers varsity basketball team open their season on Tuesday with a 81-44 loss at (10-1) Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. After a slow start the Blazers rallied in the 2nd quarter by outscoring the Warriors, who are a national top ten team, 15-12 to make the half time score 34-20. In the 2nd half The Blazers had a a tough time stopping University of Virginia signee, BJ Stith who scored all of his 15 points in that half.
Head Boys Varsity Basketball Coach John Combs' Game Quotes: It was certainly a huge challenge to open our season on the road at Oak Hill Academy with five brand new starters, and 13 of our 16 young men on our roster playing in their first varsity game. While I am not pleased at all with the loss there most certainly some bright spots and learning experiences for our guys. I am proud of our effort-but we must continue to work hard to get better.
The final score of the game as the quote goes: It is what it is--but I don't think it accurately tells how well we competed at times during the game. We got off to a terrible start playing through our nervousness/jitters and adjusting to their length, but once we stop playing scared we competed very well. After the bad 1st quarter outscoring them in the 2nd quarter showed me something positive about their mental toughness. No excuses are made--we got beat soundly by an extremely talented team with well over five Division 1 players who extremely well coached by Steve Smith and his staff. Coach Steve Smith now has over 900 career wins and I expect one day he will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
