As part of their introduction to atoms, Dr. Maynes' Honors Chemistry class recently participated in "Marketing the Elements". In this exercise, each student selected and researched an element, prepared a poster to illustrate its value, and then presented their results to the class, "selling" the excitement of their element. During the presentation, students used their new Thinkpads to collect information on each element in a spreadsheet, including who discovered it and when, and some interesting and perhaps surprising facts about the element. Since this activity incorporates the life skills of writing and oral presentation, it is well in line with the Common Core standards for literacy, as well as a good way to learn some fundamentals of chemistry!
