Our popular apocalypse book group read Another Place to Die by Sam North on our Summer Reading Celebration Day on September 17th. Students unknowingly engaged in a hands-on lesson in which simulated bacteria (Glo-Germ UV powder) was transferred to several students through a hand shake with the teacher before being asked to introduce themselves to other students and shake hands. A UV light showed that most of the students in the room had been "infected." Students also participated in another lab modeling the transmission of a disease by exchanging simulated "body fluids" with random students in addition to a book discussion, re-designing the book cover, relating movie clips to the book, and discussing the CDC and current disease threats such as the Ebola Virus.
