The new mathematics standards were approved upon first reading by the State Board of Education (SBE) on February 11th. The vote was unanimous, similar to the January vote on the new English Language Arts standards. The next step is to secure certification by state colleges and universities that the standards will prepare students for college.
Both the ELA and math standards must also be approved by the Education Oversight Committee. Once the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) secures their approval and concludes the certification process, the standards go back to the SBE for a second and final reading approval. If all goes well, that final approval will come during the March 11th SBE meeting. For more information, click on the "New Standards" button on the SCDE's homepage.
