The S.C. Department of Education reported in 2014 that 10.4% of teens surveyed were sexually assaulted by someone their age, primarily their boyfriend or girlfriend. This 10.4% represents only those who spoke up. Often, victims do not report or talk of their assault out of fear of being humiliated or punished by the one that violated them. In addition, victims are often blamed and their rights are violated when they do report the crime. The Scholars Academy Class of 2017 has made it their mission to advocate for the legal rights of teenage victims and to educate the general public about teen sexual assault.
