The Honors Chemistry classes of Mrs. High-Washington and Dr. Maynes were visited last week by Dr. Robert Bowen, the Director of Recruitment for Clemson's School of Materials Science. Dr. Bowen spoke to the students about Clemson University and the study of materials science. Students particularly appreciated the creation of plasma in a microwave oven, the creation of crude human vein transplant samples using sodium alginate (seaweed) and a solution of calcium chloride, and the amazing amount of water the polymer in a common diaper can take up. This served as a great authentic learning experience for our students.
