ACADEMICS: ACCESS Testing Resources & Tips

Are you looking for specific practice questions and tips to assist English Learners with the ACCESS 2018.  Try some of the following ideas:

Writing
  1. Help students write using text-to-self and compare and contrast modalities.
  2. Help students learn to write for science and social studies questions.
  3. Check out Pinterest for creative writing ideas!

Speaking
  1. Have kids wearing headphones with mics regularly to practice!  Ensure they are speaking loud enough and clearly enough to be understood.
  2. Challenge students to expand their vocabulary as well as sentence and paragraph level complexity with meaningful conversations.  More complicated speech and vocabulary are required for higher scores.

Listening
  1. Select a short, level-appropriate content area reading and read it aloud to students.  Afterwards, ask follow up questions from the reading.
  2. http://www.esl-lab.com/ - Choose more academic passages than conversational ones, as the academic listening is what will be tested on ACCESS.

Reading

  1. Select a short, level-appropriate content area reading to have students read, then ask follow up questions.
  2. Help students look for answers in the text and also to take thoughts from the text to build on their own ideas.
