10 Ridge View Students Placed in NAACP ACT-SO Competition


Students from across Columbia gathered at South Carolina Science Academy to compete in the annual NAACP ACT-SO Columbia Competition. Students competed in academic disciplines including Humanities, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Sciences and Business.  The top students in each category were announced at an awards ceremony held at GMG Music Center.  Among those students who received medals, were ten (10) Blazers:
  • Jada Adams,  GOLD medal in Poetry (Performance) and SILVER medal in Poetry (Written)
  • Hadiyah Ballard,  BRONZE medal in Poetry (Written)
  • Cameron Borum,  GOLD medals in Music Instrumental Contemporary and Drawing
  • Delia Glover,  BRONZE medal in Photography
  • Kiara Hayes,  GOLD medal in Music Composition and SILVER medal in Music Vocal Classical
  • Byron Lattimore,  GOLD medal in Music Vocal Classical and SILVER medal in Filmmaking
  • Rosebella Owuor,  SILVER medal in Poetry (Performance)
  • Christopher Thomas,  BRONZE medal in Short Story
  • Kiera Thomas,  GOLD medal in Filmmaking
  • Stephanie Wiggins,  SILVER medal in Music Vocal Contemporary

Mr. Jeffrey McMicken, AVID Coordinator, also received the Vernon Jarrett Community Award of Excellence.  The gold medalists will advance to represent Ridge View High School AND the city of Columbia at the National ACT-SO Olympics being held this July 11th-16th in San Antonio, Texas.  They will have an opportunity to compete for up to $5,000 in scholarship prizes.
