ACADEMICS: Summer Reading Celebration Day Recap

Ridge View held its 9th Annual Summer Reading Celebration Day on September 28th. Our students enjoyed some interesting activities in their book groups. Some of the highlights include:

• Mike Genova of Mike Genova Family Karate teaching self-defense, and a presentation by the Richland County Sheriff's Department about Human Trafficking to the group that read Sharon Draper's Panic.
• Electroshock therapy experiment involving electrocuting a pickle in the book group for Madeleine Roux's Asylum.
• A paranormal investigator guest speaker visited the group who read The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting.
• Blazer boys basketball coach Yerrick Stoneman sharing personal video highlights of when he was an assistant coach at Oak Hill Academy taking on Lebron James in the group that read Shooting Stars by Lebron James and Buzz Bissinger.
• Basic medical care simulation in the post-apocalyptic world sans-medicine in the group reading Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank.
• A basketball obstacle course simulation by the group that read True Legend by Mike Lupica.
• Carroll Baker, guest speaker from FCA South Carolina spoke to the group that read Woodlawn by Todd Gerelds.
• A Star Wars video was produced by the group that read Star Wars: Aftermath by Chuck Wendig.
• Students made digital posters for The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde.
• A Celebration of Success Carnival with food, inflatables, dancing and other activities to close out the day. 

We hope that all of our students had a wonderful day and are even more motivated to read. Next years' Summer Reading Celebration Day is tentatively scheduled for September 27, 2017.

ATHLETICS: Football Falls to 5-1 on Season

The Varsity football team suffered its first loss of the season to South Pointe 46-21 in the opening week of Region 3-AAAA play. The Blazers fell to 5-1 on the season after posting their best start since the 2006 season. South Pointe jumped out to a 13-0 lead with 6 minutes remaining in the 1st Quarter. The Blazers got on the scoreboard five minutes later when senior receiver Tre High scored on a 5 yard pass from QB Jalen Smith. Nick Lawyers PAT was successful to bring the Blazers within seven points. South Pointe entered the half with a 23-7 lead, but Ridge View closed the gap to 23-15 with an 18 yard touchdown run by Latheron Rogers-Anderson and a two point conversion by Ali Kelly in the 3rd Quarter. South Pointe countered with a rushing touchdown of their own to increase their lead to 30-15 with 3:12 left in the 3rd, and added a field goal with 11:58 remaining in the 4th Quarter. Ridge View's last score was on a 35 yard pass from QB Smith to Rogers-Anderson with 8:41 left in the 4th, but South Pointe padded the score with two more touchdowns to claim the region victory. The Blazers will be back in action this Friday in their Homecoming game at 7:30 PM against York Comprehensive at Richland Two District Stadium at Blythewood.

• It's Red Carpet Ready Dress Day. 
• International Walk to School Day. Meet a teacher at the Highlands Park or in front of Brookland Baptist in the Summit to receive a ticket for a healthy snack & a chance to win HiWire tickets.
• Junior Class Ring Orders in the Multipurpose Room
• Lunch: Wildin' Out Wednesday will feature Rap Battles, Comedy Sketches and Minute to Win It games in the Auditorium.

Thursday, October 6th

• It's Athlete Hat Day (Donate $1 to wear a hat at school today). 
• A representative from Columbia College will visit RVHS (Time TBD)
• Lunch: Pokemon Go LIVE! during lunch throughout the building.

ATHLETICS: Butler & Staley Named to Shrine Bowl

Congratulations to Ridge View Football Seniors Cameron Butler and Damani Staley on being selected to the 2016 Shrine Bowl! This is an amazing honor for these young men and our entire Football program! The 80th Shrine Bowl will be played on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg. ACTIVITIES: Homecoming Week Activities

This coming week is Homecoming. Please join in the fun, dress up, participate and enjoy the week leading up to the our Homecoming football game against York. The themes for the week is "Hall of Fame." Here are the dress days and lunch activities:

• Monday: Music Monday (genre) dress day. Come join the fun with music playing in the A/B courtyard during lunch. Take a Hall F(r)ame picture with your favorite Homecoming Contestant as we kick off a week of high energy for this year's Homecoming 2016.
• Tuesday: Actor/Actress Look Alike dress day. Come to the Auditorium to cheer on Faculty members engaging in a Lip Sync Battle. 
• Wednesday: Red Carpet Ready dress day. It is Wildin' Out Wednesday, so come to the Auditorium to check out Rap Battles, Comedy Sketches and Minute to Win It games during lunch.
• Thursday: Athlete Hat Day. It's Pokemon Go LIVE! during lunch throughout the building, so watch out for those little creatures as they weave in and out of places trying to avoid student players vying to win the ultimate prize - a Pokeball filled with surprises!
• Friday: It's Formation Blazer Prize Day. We will have a Pep Rally at the end of the day. Bring your best Blazer Pride to the Large Gym and cheer on your favorite Class as we end the week long Class Competition and Cheer on our Fall Teams and Homecoming Contestants!

Bring your Game Face all week as each day Classes will compete for the coveted title of Most Spirited! Who will win this year? Join in the fun and games as we support the Homecoming Contestants in their fundraising efforts for Raoul Jenkins. Purchase spirit links that will travel down each hallway to see who has the most Spirit support. The Homecoming King and Queen will be announced at Halftime of the Homecoming game against York at 7:30 pm on Friday at Richland District Two Stadium at Blythewood.

ACADEMICS: CAT Students Train in Disney World

Ten of our Carolina Alliance for Technology (CAT) computer science and engineering students scored a 5 on the WorkKeys test last spring, and as a result were selected to participate in the Youth Education Series at Disney World. The Blazer contingent of Mikasia Caree, Trenequia Chandler, Johnaida Eliscar, Aaron Ford, Jazzmin Graham, Chris Greene, Jaylen Phillips, Aaron Walker, Jerod Walker and Trinity Yates traveled to Disney World earlier this week. On the first day, the students participated in a program titled Manage Your Brand, where they learned how to formulate strategies for personal and professional success, planning for a promising future, and discovering how to navigate unexpected career highs and lows. On the second day, the students learned about Walt Disney's leadership and teamwork strategies and how to apply them to achieve stronger collaborations kills, increase confidence and set a course for success. In both programs, our students were able to practice teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving skills as the group participated in one-of-a-kind moments using the magic of Disney to make learning more impactful. It was a tremendous experience that combined fun and learning!
