Inside The Classroom: Spanish Students Honor Their Ancestors

El Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday in which family and friends gather to pray and remember friends and family members who have died.  The celebrations takes place on October 31st, November 1st, and November 2nd, which coincides with All Hallows' Eve, All Saints' Day, and All Souls' Day.  To honor the deceased, they build ofrendas, which are shrines, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed.  On November 2nd, they visit the graves with these gifts, have a picnic, and share stories and memories with the younger generation.  This picnic lasts well into the night ending with everyone lighting candles.  To celebrate this day, Ms. Puskarz Spanish 3 students made gravestones and a shrine to honor their relatives and friends who have passed.
