Changing Discipline Policies Effective January 16th

The RVHS administrative team has chosen to update a few discipline policies in order to better serve our student population. To that end, we have initiated the following changes which will take effect at the beginning of the Spring Semester on Thursday, January 16, 2014.
  1. One ASD Hour vs. Three ASD Hours: Since the goal of consequences is to help students change behaviors, not overwhelm them with detention hours that they cannot serve, we have decided to decrease the number of After School Detention (ASD) hours for minor violations, such as being Tardy to Class and No Visible I.D., from three hours to one hour. However, failure to serve accrued ASD hours will result in more severe consequences.
  2. Escalation Protocols: The escalation protocol for consequences will be 1 hour ASD, then 3 hours of Saturday Work Detail (SWD), In School Suspension (ISS), Out of School Suspension (OSS), and finally a Recommendation for Expulsion (RFE). ASD can be served on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays in Room A-1. SWD must be served all on the same Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. SWD will be reserved for violations such as Dress Code and Profanity. The use of ISS, OSS, and RFE are reserved for more serious violations.
  3. Electronic Communication Devices (ECDs): Misuse of ECDs continues to be a problem. Please remind your child that they may not wear headphones or earbuds while moving between locations on campus. This is a safety issue. Consequences include, but are not limited to, confiscation of headphones/earbuds and confiscation of device (to be returned to a parent). Please also remind your child that they may not use ECDs to capture audio, video, or still images of anyone while on campus or at any school sponsored events without express permission granted in advance. And, finally, please remind your child that they may not use ECDs in restrooms, locker rooms, or changing areas at any time. Violations of this policy may result in a recommendation for expulsion.
If you have any questions regarding these changes in policies, then please feel free to contact Allen Upchurch, Assistant Principal, at aupchurc@richland2.org, or via telephone at (803) 699-2999 extension 234. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your child's educational experience.
