ACADEMICS Spotlight: Scholars Injustice Twitter Project

Left: Devin Lemon; Right: Raven Guerra
The Scholars Academy Sophomore Research Seminar is putting social justice into practice through a massive research project about George Stinney, the youngest person to be executed in the 20th Century. He was charged with 1st Degree Murder, with no physical evidence, of Betty Binnicker and Mary Thames in Alcolu, Clarendon County, S.C. Stinney's entire jury was white due to racial segregation, which prevented any African Americans from participating in the trial. His family was run out of town, so Stinney had no support during his trial. Later, a confession, of which there are no written records to verify, led to his conviction and eventual execution by the electric chair in 1944. The students are constructing a webpage with resources and have started a Twitter page to inform people about the George Stinney case. Facts will be provided each day. The goal of the Twitter page is to get the word out about the injustice of this case. It would be extremely helpful if the page could receive more followers, so the word gets out about George Stinney. Follow us at @supportstinney. The Scholars Academy Sophomore class hopes to make a difference. Any support from members of the Ridge View community would be greatly appreciated.
