Scholars students at recent State House rally in support of a new trial for George Stinney |
On Sunday, June 22nd, Scholars Academy students Kiana Sweatt and Aaliyah Harrell will appear on the WIS television show Awareness at 11 am as part of a panel discussing the requested re-opening of the George Stinney case. Stinney, the youngest person to be executed in the state of South Carolina, is believed by some to be innocent of the crimes he was convicted of. An advocacy group has requested a new trial from the state of South Carolina and is awaiting word on whether or not that will happen. Sophomore Scholars Academy Magnet students studied the case as part of their Research I class and have become advocates for social justice through what they have learned.
