On May 14th, the Upsilon Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
(Irmo, SC) hosted its’ 10th biennial Debutante Cotillion at the
Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Ridge View seniors KiYona McClary, Faith
McKie, Kaci Merriwether-Hawkins, and Ronteona Willis were among the 24
debutantes presented during this grand affair. The cotillion marked the end of
an eventful eight month season filled with various community service and
volunteer events, bonding activities, and self-help and informational
workshops. Highlights of the night included a dance by the “debs” and their
dads, and another by the “debs” and their escorts, followed by a delicious
dinner and an assortment of rich desserts.
The grande finale was the organization’s awarding of over $60,000 in
scholarships to the 24 participating debutantes. In addition, Kaci
Merriwether-Hawkins was awarded the “Emerald of Service” award for her
participation in and commitment to the volunteer and service events during the
debutante season. Our Blazers continue to shine in our community and beyond!
