CAUTION: Please Pay Attention to Pedestrian Signals

We have noticed that some students crossing the street when the pedestrian signals are displaying the red hand.  The intersection at the Ridge View bus lot and the entrance to Food Lion can be a very dangerous area if students do not follow the rules for walking across the street.  Because we would like to avoid any accidents between students and cars, we wanted to remind everyone of these rules.
  1. Students should only cross the street when the pedestrian signals display the walk signal (see the image on the left).  At this time cars should be stopped allowing students to safely cross the street.
  2. If the pedestrian signal displays a red hand (see the image on the right), students should not cross the street.  They can push the button below the pedestrian signal that will cause the traffic light to change and allow them to cross the street.
If you have students that walk to school, please review this rules with them.  We all want them to walk with care, pay attention to what is going on around them, and get to school and return home safely.

ATHLETICS: Newest Blazer Rangers Rifle Team Members

Matthew Bullard & Kortaize Gilyard
Three days after school was back in session, on a Saturday when most were catching those extra hours of sleep after an exciting first week of school, Matthew Bullard and Kortaize Gilyard were already sitting in another classroom at 7 AM. While the school was quiet everywhere else, the JROTC wing resonated with rifle safety terms and rules, team procedures and the infamous safety exam. Before a cadet can even touch a rifle they must undertake and pass the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s extremely rigorous safety exam with nothing less than a score of 100%. Cadets only get two attempts to pass the exam with a perfect score. Anything less and they are sent home. The stress is palpable when the examinees are told “Begin!” Once the exam is complete, the stress however does not end as the “wanna-be’s” must then negotiate 10 hours of hands-on training and a series of shooting tests, ultimately concluding with a 1 hour and 15 minute scored competition during which only the top competitors “survive the cut” to be members of the Blazer Rangers Rifle Team. At the end of an extremely long day when the door to the rifle range opened and the day nearly gone, two cadets emerged victorious in their quest to become the two newest members of the Blazer Rangers. Please congratulate cadets Matthew Bullard and Kortaize Gilyard.

ATHLETICS: Blazers Stun Blythewood in Rivalry Matchup

Sophomore Kicker Nick Lawyer
The Ridge View Blazers stunned Blythewood on a last second field goal to defeat the Bengals 23-21 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Most of the first half belonged to Blythewood as they went up 18-0 before heading into halftime 18-7, but the Blazers hung in there and pulled to within one point late in the fourth quarter. With the Bengals up 21-20, Ridge View attempted but was unsuccessful on a two point conversion. The Blazers were given one more opportunity after Dejuan Warren forced a Bengals fumble and recovered it on the next possession. After driving deep into Bengals territory, it appeared that time expired as Blythewood's bench emptied onto the field in celebration. Their celebration turned out to be premature, however, as one second was put back on the clock. Placekicker Nick Lawyer then nailed a field goal through the uprights for the victory. The Blazers defense held Blythewood to only three second half points a week after shutting out Sumter in the second half for another come from behind victory. After two weeks of football, one thing should be clear, don't count the Blazers out!

For more information, click on the image to read a recap of the game courtesy of The State newspaper, and don't forget to purchase your tickets for the game against Ninety-Six this coming Friday, the first varsity game ever to be played on our campus. GO BLAZERS!

RVH Bus Route Changes

Students who live less than 1.5 miles from the school will no longer be able to ride the bus.  New sidewalks were installed to provide a walkable route to Ridge View.  Before the sidewalks were in place, the Richland School District Two was allowed by the State Department of Education to have an exception to the state law that prohibits bus stops within 1.5 miles of a school.  That exception is no longer in place; and Ridge View families living in Waverly Place neighborhood and certain sections of the Autumn Glen neighborhood are affected by this change.  These families will need to arrange of alternative modes of transportation to school such as walking, riding a bicycle, or becoming a car rider/driver.  We apologize for any hardship that this may have cause you and your Ridge View Blazer.  If you have any questions, please contact Melissa Myers (mmyers@richland2.org or 803.699.2999 ext. 84233) or Allen Upchurch (aupchurc@richland2.org or 803.699.2999 ext. 84234).

The updated Ridge View bus routes can be found by clicking on the image.

ACTIVITIES: FCA Presents Fields of Faith Concert

Are You Career Ready?

Are you career ready? Here are the habits of the most respected employees as compiled by Career Headlines. Which of these 15 will be hardest for you as an employee? What can you do now to overcome the problem?
1.They are likeable. Even when they're overworked, frustrated, or disagree, they remain positive. You won't find them sighing, rolling their eyes, or becoming defensive.
2.They buy into the vision. They make sure their company stands for something they can believe in. Otherwise, they go somewhere else.
3.They look out for their peers. A workplace holds a group of people who should be committed to each other's success. Lone wolves should not apply.
4.They take initiative. They don't sit on their hands. They don't ignore work needing completion, even when the work doesn't fall into their job description.
5.They follow through. Reliability is a requirement for great employees. No more to be said about this one!
6.They offer good suggestions. Great employees are always looking for ways to improve their company. Be careful that your idea is practical.
7.They accept that they can't always win. Great employees don't have to agree with every detail, but they must give their all for the team.
8.They support the leaders. If they can't do that, they need to change their attitude or find different work.
9.They take care of themselves. If they don't take care of their personal lives, they're unlikely to be successful.
10.They act ethically. Great employees strive to get stuff done, but they also have a bias toward fairness.
11.They have a sense of humor. All jobs can be stressful, and great employees see humor in everyday events.
12.They look for chances to help people. Whether it's to help a colleague with a task or help a customer find an answer, you should want to be part of the solution.
13.They evangelize. Everyone's job involves sales to some degree. Great employees know this and spread the news about their company's great products and services.
14.They say thanks. Great employees express appreciation to their boss, coworkers, and customers.
15.They count to 10. Rather than reacting immediately to frustration, great employees count to 10 before responding.
