ATHLETICS: Varsity Wrestling Highlights

The Blazers finished in the top 15 of the Cardinal Newman Holiday Classic on Saturday, Dec. 2nd.  Jonathan Cardona, Lorenza Waiters, and Mike McQueen led the way for the team in scoring.  Mike McQueen just barely missed placing in his first varsity tournament, dropping a 3-1 match in the consolation semi-final that would have given him a chance to wrestle for 3rd place.

On Wednesday, December 6th, the Blazers wrestled 3 matches at Spring Valley.  Starting the night off against the Columbia Capitals, the team got out to an an early 10-0 lead before losing to a very tough team 54-26.  Against Richland Northeast the team was able to get back on the positive side of things with a 54-29 win.  In the final match of the evening with the host Vikings, the lead changed 5 times before Spring Valley was able to hold on to a 42-32 victory over the good guys in purple.  The Blazers were lead by Dimitrias Chestnut (3-0 on the evening), Quentin Frost (2-1), Brandon Holliman (2-1), and Jabari Hampton getting his first pin of the season.

Thursday night the wrestling team grappled with Cardinal Newman and Westwood.  In the first match of the night, the Blazers traded the lead with the defending 4x State Champs from Cardinal Newman.  The Cardinals took a 36-23 lead with 4 matches to go.  A forfeit to Terry Carson, another first period pin from Jabari Hampton, followed by another pin from Jacob Shusterman set the stage for an exciting final match.  Off the bench, Mike McQueen takes the mat and quickly pins the heavyweight from Cardinal Newman, securing the 47-36 victory.

Their next match is Wednesday, December 14th against Silver Bluff and North Augusta at Silver Bluff HS and Saturday, December 16th at Milltown Duals in Fort Mill, SC.
