ATHLETICS: Varsity Wrestling Finishes 2nd After Westwood Match

Big night for the Blazers! With 2 Region 3-AAAA matches to wrestle tonight, the team needed to win 1 to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2011!

In the first match of the evening, Westwood was able to hold off the team with a 38-36 decision. Neither team was wrestling at full strength, and there were some great matches wrestled. Key performers for the squad were McKale Yanagacio and Mike McQueen, both of whom came up with necessary pins to put the team in striking distance of a win. While unfortunate to come so close to a win, once again the team showed vast improvement in the past year against the Redhawks. In 2017, the Blazers lost 60-15. Earlier this season, 45-30. Hopefully next season we can get on the right side of the final score!

In the final match of the Region 3-AAAA slate, the team took on Lancaster. In 2017, we lost another heartbreaking match 38-33. This year, we showed improvement by getting a 52-30 decision. Will Johnson, Jonathan Cardona, Brandon Holliman, Donovan Keeffe, Jalen Jones, Lorenza Waiters, McKale Yanagacio, Jacob Shusterman, and Dimitrias Chestnut all performed at a high level to secure the win and the playoff spot.

Up next, individuals will wrestle in the Region 3-AAAA Tournament for the chance to qualify for the Upper State Tournament in a few weeks. The whole team will next compete against Airport High School next Saturday, February 3rd in the 1st Round of the AAAA State Playoffs.

ATHLETICS: Wrestling Loses Hard Fight Against South Pointe & York

The wrestling Blazers had a great night of competition at RNE on Tuesday, January 23rd.  While the team did not come away with a team win in either of the 2 matches they wrestled against South Pointe and York.  Great effort and improvement was shown not just from this beginning of this season until now, but also since the last time we squared off against these tough teams.

In the match against South Pointe, they lost a hard fight (62-15 decision).  Against the Stallions, the Blazers were lead by outstanding efforts by Lorenza Waiters, Jabari Hampton, McKale Yanagacio, and Mike McQueen.  Lorenza wrestled a tough match that prevented South Pointe from scoring bonus points and widening their lead, while Jabari and Mike were able to secure big pins to get some momentum going for the team.  McKale was able to grind out a very tough decision against his opponent that was workman-like and efficient.

The score was much closer against York (56-21).  Key performers against the Cougars were Jonathan Cardona, Donovan Keeffe, Davin Moses, Jabari Hampton and McKale Yanagacio.  Jonathan was able to use some key concepts that we have been working on heavily in practice the past week to win an awe-inspiring match in overtime while bumping up to the 138 pound weight class.  Donovan Keeffe was able to generate a 12 point swing match that got the team fired up on the bench, surely inspiring Jabari to come off the bench and do his thing for a decisive 2nd period pin.  McKale continued his solid work for the evening by going out and wrestling a tight match that he ultimately lost but prevented bonus points being scored.  This past weekend they wrestled against Westwood and Lancaster with hopes to participate in the Upper State Championships in February.  Stay tuned to hear the results of those matches.

ACADEMICS: CAT Students Attend Girls STEM Fest

Left: Augustina Aidoo talks to Lauren Wallace about the
manufacturing process.  Right: Leah Atkinson learns the
importance of safety in manufacturing.

In December Edventure and TRANE joined forces and hosted a Girls STEM Fest at Trane.  Like many manufacturers in South Carolina they are growing very rapidly and have set high goals for the upcoming years.  Trane is actively trying to increase women in the engineering and manufacturing fields by exposing our students to the many career possibilities that exist in manufacturing.

Many female Trane employees spoke to our CAT young ladies about their career path and their passion at Trane.  Trane set up tables representing several different processes in the plant with the women who run them as facilitators.  The Ridge View CAT young ladies were able to engage these women in conversation about their career and got a chance to tour the facility.

Edventure representative, Marc Drews, stated in an email to RV CAT, "the engagement and enthusiasm that they shared was invigorating.  The tour of the facilities was amazing as they learned that the world of manufacturing has so many career possibilities.  Our entire team was blown away with how involved the students were as they spoke to employees who shared their passion about the important role they played at TRANE."  Samary Rodriguez from Trane mentioned, "Hosting these young women was an inspirable day for all of us. We hope to have a Girls STEM and MFG Summit every year moving forward."  This is great news and the CAT ladies are look forward to returning!

ACADEMICS: Checking Out IHS Biomedical Innovations This Semester

Have you ever broken your leg and had to use crutches to get around, taken antibiotics when you were sick, or used an ace bandage when you sprained your ankle? All of these products exist because innovative people set out to create a solution for a biomedical problem. Whether it is creating a product from scratch or improving a current design, biomedical professionals work to create the specialized products that save lives and make patients safer and more comfortable. To design new or better biomedical solutions, you first start with a need, a problem, or a want, and follow through a series of steps or phases that result in the creation of something that serves as a solution.

Students will investigate the evolution of various biomedical products, brainstorm ideas for a new biomedical product or for a way to improve an existing product, and evaluate solutions of the past and present. Students will explore possible design solutions, select the best approach, and develop a design proposal. Finally, students will showcase their designs with a model, prototype, or schematic and create a marketing plan to pitch their product to potential investors.

ACADEMICS: ACCESS 2018 Tips & Resources

Are you looking for specific practice questions and tips to assist English Learners with the ACCESS 2018.  Try some of the following ideas:

Writing
  1. Help students write using text-to-self and compare and contrast modalities.
  2. Help students learn to write for science and social studies questions.
  3. Check out Pinterest for creative writing ideas!

Speaking
  1. Have kids wearing headphones with mics regularly to practice!  Ensure they are speaking loud enough and clearly enough to be understood.
  2. Challenge students to expand their vocabulary as well as sentence and paragraph level complexity with meaningful conversations.  More complicated speech and vocabulary are required for higher scores.

Listening
  1. Select a short, level-appropriate content area reading and read it aloud to students.  Afterwards, ask follow up questions from the reading.
  2. http://www.esl-lab.com/ - Choose more academic passages than conversational ones, as the academic listening is what will be tested on ACCESS.

Reading
  1. Select a short, level-appropriate content area reading to have students read, then ask follow up questions.
  2. Help students look for answers in the text and also to take thoughts from the text to build on their own ideas.

ACADEMICS: IHS Junior Medical Interventions Update

Today scientists and biomedical professionals have the power to look inside of our cells and decipher the DNA code. Various genetic tests are used to diagnose disease before it ever shows its face or affects our offspring. This semester 11th IHS Medical Intervention students will examine the available types of genetic testing and screening and discuss ethical implications of these tests, as well as focus on prenatal testing, newborn testing, and carrier screening.

Playing the part of genetic counselors, students will analyze a patient case concerning issues of genetic testing and provide appropriate recommendations. They will explore molecular techniques necessary to complete a genetic test by amplifying a DNA segment using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Students will then have a chance to see the connection between phenotype and genotype as they test their own genes. Students will investigate the interventions that exist to help protect and monitor a growing fetus

Students will examine how the study of genetics will alter the way doctors and scientists treat disease, as well as the way humans reproduce. Students will learn about traditional gene therapy and genome editing. Both are potentially life-saving treatments for many debilitating genetic disorders. By reading articles from opposing viewpoints, students will debate the safety of this practice and write a policy statement highlighting guidelines and restrictions on gene therapy testing and research.

ACADEMICS: IHS 10th Grade Human Body Systems Update

Human vision is a combination of “seeing” with the eye and “perceiving” with the brain. The eye has the remarkable ability to convert light into a stream of nervous impulses. Various structures in the eye focuses light on the retina and neurons then take information about this image to the brain for processing and interpretation. Each structure in the eye plays a unique role in assuring that the image you see is the image before you.

This semester 10th grade Institute of Health Science (IHS) students will:
  • examine the structure of an eye by completing an eye dissection.
  • investigate the many aspects of visual perception by completing station exercises and by interpreting results for tests in visual acuity, depth perception, peripheral vision, color vision, accommodation, optical illusions, and afterimages.
  • describe the tests and procedures that go into a routine eye exam, as well as compare three different career paths in the field of vision.

ACADEMICS: Principles of Biomedical Sciences Update

9th grade Institute of Health Sciences (IHS) student investigated what it means to have diabetes, explored how doctors make an initial diagnosis of diabetes and characterize the disease, completed simulated glucose tolerance testing as well as insulin analysis on three patients, including Anna, and drew conclusions about their disease status based on their findings. By analyzing test results, they will deduce what is happening inside the body when a person has Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

Glucose levels are related to the food we consume. During the Spring Semester, IHS freshmen will investigate the science of food and look in detail at the biochemistry of macromolecules and test for the presence of sugar, starch, protein, and lipids in three common food items, including testing the stomach contents of the ill-fated Anna Garcia. Analysis of her stomach contents at the time of her death may reveal information about Anna’s last meal and provide additional evidence regarding the conditions surrounding her mysterious death.

They will also analyze Anna’s diet and assess how well she was meeting  her nutritional requirements. Students will then complete a series of molecular puzzles to build macromolecules and explore the biochemistry of food. They will begin to see how the body works to harness the power of what we eat, through the assembly and disassembly of macromolecules.  Students further explore the energy content of various foods by completing calorimetry experiments.
